Nita Kincaid Obituary, Death –  Newport’s Nita Butler Kincaid attended Rogers. She got a Master of Education from Western Connecticut State University in 1965 after studying psychology at Connecticut College. Nita met her loving husband of 54 years when Gary Whitney Kincaid recruited her for her first teaching job in Weston. Weston Field Club was created after they married and taught. In Newburyport, Mass., Nita taught at Nock Middle School and restored two historic houses. Found her green thumb. Since, her lovely gardens have been admired.

Nita and Gary enjoyed their grand homes, antiquing, sailing aboard the Nita B, and touring the UK and Europe in Newburyport. Nita quit school in 1981 to work at Fidelity. Nita and Fidelity saw her timing, place, and suitability. From junior sales to Legal Department management, Senior Vice President of Retail Marketing, President of Investor Information offices, Chief Administrative Officer for all retail business units, President of all service operations, and coordination of a new securities system, Fidelity Boston promoted her.

Company leader Nita has high standards for herself and her staff. She was respected for her intelligence and wit everywhere. Others were always respected and cared for. Nita and Gary retired from Fidelity in 1995 and renovated a North Stonington landmark. Rebuilt from scratch, an 18th-century Concord saltbox house. Farm has a historic barn and “milk house” (now cottage). Farm animals include cats, dogs, chickens, ducks, geese, and horses. Not ordinary horses. Nita and Gary loved draft horses throughout Europe. Edward and William, Doc and “Cordy” For years, Nita and Gary organised and won the North Stonington Fair, where all four horses competed.

Nortington Garden Club suited Nita’s green thumb. She eagerly oversaw the annual plant sale and newsletter for years. Nita enjoyed Garden Club gardening. Nita organised Conservation Commission property easements, co-chaired Hewitt Farm Committee, moderated Community Conversations, co-edited North Stonington Quarterly, and served on the Town Government Structure Committee. Nita ran for Selectman in 2017 hoping her experience would help the city. Her election yielded two Selectman mandates. Nita studied success tactics and believed creative communication was crucial. North Stonington was special, so she kept it.

She leaves Gary and three grateful stepchildren: Daryl Kincaid, his wife, Laurel, and children Jeanette and Douglas; Wendy Kincaid, Beckett and Devon Reed; and Jodi Kaumayoshi, Craig, Ryan, and Jason. Nita is survived by her brother Barry Butler of Napa Valley, Calif., and many nieces and nephews. Wheeler Library in North Stonington, Nita’s preferred charity, accepts donations. Visitation is 4–6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main Street, Westerly, RI. Sunday’s family-only burial is Dec. 17.
